Operator Shortens Installation Time in Environmentally Sensitive Area Using Flexible Steel Pipe
The Challenge
A major operator in the Powder River Basin wanted to install a 11.6-mile pipeline to dispose of produced water coming from a primary production field. The pipeline had to be installed in record time to avoid the regional bird migration season and satisfy all concerns from environmental groups. When evaluating the options, the operator wanted a line pipe that was durable enough to withstand the harsh brine water and would be easy to install to fast-track their timeline.
The Solution
After evaluating many options, the operator selected FlexSteel 8-inch, 1,500 psi line pipe as a long-term solution because of its durability and installation speed advantages. The pipe's corrosion-resistant high- density polyethylene (HDPE) inner and outer layers enabled the company to eliminate the cost of corrosion- inhibiting additives. In addition to the pipe's corrosion- resistant features, the pipe's helically wound steel core would remove any concern about diminished performance over time.
The Result
Using FlexSteel line pipe, the oper- ator was able to install the 11.6-mile pipeline 36 days faster than their original projections. The company also indicated that the pipeline provided a reliable solution that eliminated the need for both cathodic protection and corrosion inhibitors.
